Entry Island

Despite being one of the 7 inhabited islands of the archipelago, Entry Island is the only one not connected by road. Around 60 people reside there permanently, forming a very supportive and tight-knit community that embodies the island way of life on every day.

Entry Island is also known for being a cradle of the English-speaking community of the Magdalen Islands. Mainly descending from English, Scottish and Irish settlers, the heritage remains omnipresent on the island through its found families, whose names you will certainly see: Aitkens, Chenell, Welsh, and many more.

In the past, the island was known for its propensity for agriculture thanks to its large plains and mineral-rich soil. The 20th century then saw fishing gain in importance; today, it is the island's main economic sector.

Bordered by nature, winds and the sea, Entry Island is the ideal place for walks, hikes or picnics. Whether it is to climb Big Hill, the highest peak of the archipelago (185m above sea level), admire the view from the old lighthouse or learn more about history at the Entry Island Historical Museum, everyone is bound to appreciate the serenity and the beauty occupying the landscape.

Entry Island Historical Museum

Also administered by the Old Harry Heritage Site, the Historical Museum highlights the heritage and daily realities of the Entry Island inhabitants. We explore their history, marked by agriculture, fishing, mutual aid and self-sufficiency, while evoking the advantages and challenges of living on an island.

The exhibition is located in the old Entry Island school and is enriched through a collection composed of many artefacts representing the community, its past and its present: fishing equipement, domestic items, photographs, testimonials, and much more.

The museum is open every day, from 10:00 to 16:00.
