St. Peter's-by-the-Sea Church

St. Peter's-by-the-Sea Church
Just a short walk from the Old Harry Heritage Site, St. Peters-by-the-Sea Anglican Church stands out for both its architecture and its remarkable story. Partially built with materials salvaged from a shipwreck in 1815, the church reflects the deep connection between the islanders and the sea—right down to its very foundations.
Once a place of worship for the residents of Old Harry, the church has since been deconsecrated and transformed into a museum space. It now hosts the permanent exhibition “People of the Sea,” which explores the unique and complex relationship between the Madelinots and the surrounding ocean.
Through archival photographs and interpretive panels the exhibition reveals an archipelago shaped by the sea—a source of livelihood and transportation, but also an unpredictable and dangerous force behind many shipwrecks.
The exhibit is accessible at all times.
